A rare, sophisticated piece of extraordinary artistic value, this lithograph from the series The Divine Comedy, by Salvador Dalí, brings together the genius of one of the greatest names in surrealism with the literary masterpiece by Dante Alighieri.

Dalí's project for The Divine Comedy was born from an Italian commission and resulted in one of the most ambitious graphic works of his career. The artist produced 100 watercolors, representing Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, later transformed into engravings for the graphic edition of the work. The series was published in France in collaboration with Joseph Foret and Éditions d’Art Les Heures Claires.

Dalí's interpretation is especially striking for uniting the classic structure of Dante's poem with the surrealist language that consecrated the artist. Each image transforms narrative episodes into compositions of strong visual impact, exploring themes such as sin, suffering, redemption, spirituality, and transcendence.

Curiosity

The series is composed of 100 images, distributed among the three great cantos of the work: 34 representations of Hell, 33 of Purgatory, and 33 of Paradise. The project required enormous graphic production work, and to transform the watercolors into matrices, thousands of woodblocks were crafted.

The Divine Comedy also held a special place in Dalí's artistic trajectory. According to the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí itself, the artist was familiar with Dante's work from a young age and used the project to develop a language marked by classicism and mysticism, incorporating his surrealist vision into the medieval narrative.

The great differentiator of this piece is the signature of Salvador Dalí, transforming a graphic work related to one of the most important projects of his career into memorabilia of enormous interest to collectors. It is worth noting that copies of the series may present different characteristics of edition, technique, and signature, with documentation and provenance being important elements in the evaluation of each piece.

An exceptional, elegant work charged with history, perfect for collectors of Salvador Dalí, surrealism, graphic art, and universal literature, preserving the interpretation of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century on one of the fundamental works of Western culture.
